in response to a friend about thoughts on her diet:
have you thought about not looking at calories at all? You also mentioned that your diet was very similar to a paleo diet. Have you ever considered something more like Esselstyn’s diet or the China Study? They are a different point of view then the paleo, but just as fascinating. I personally am not willing to do any of these diets because I am finding it hard enough just to stay off the extreme items on my food sensitivity list (from the AlCAT test I took) -- that is, if I want any food prepared by anyone else, ie restaurant food, prepackaged food, or any food that's not in its original form, which half the time I do like to have. It was hard enough before to make sure I stayed well fed, but not the challenge is even bigger for me if I try to not eat what I apparently might be sensitive to. But, the reason why I was thinking of the other diets is because for a few months there we went without barely any meat or dairy or even fish at all, and I was a little unnerved by how much weight my husband lost. One of those months we also were not eating that much gluten grains either (since it was on my mildly sensitive list), other then the bread in his sandwiches. Since around 2004, we had already started to lower our meat intake going from it being over half of our meal to 1/4 for a few year to less the a quarter for a few years after that, to eventually those couple of months where it was only about 5% of our entire food intake, but during those few months I was alarmed by drop in weight in him. But getting rid of both meats/dairy and gluten grains to that extent even though it wasn't 100% gone was too much for me and I started being the worst person to be around, so I brought back the glutens and cheeses though not to the degree we had before and other items that were on my mild list which has helped me a lot. But anyways, it's worth looking into the China Study if you are concerned about any of your body's well-being.. That doesn't mean I advocate following it, but I do advocate having every bit of extra information one can find and differing opinions to add to your decision of how you are eating.
